When you’re putting together the equipment list for an offshore campaign, the question of whether to rent or purchase ROV tooling comes up on almost every job. The answer isn’t always obvious, and getting it wrong can cost you — either in unnecessary capital expenditure or in day rates while you wait for kit to arrive.
This post sets out the practical considerations from our perspective as an Aberdeen-based ROV tooling rental company working with operators and contractors across the North Sea.
For most offshore contractors, rental makes more sense than purchase for the majority of their tooling requirements. Here’s why:
No capital expenditure
Purchasing a Schilling T4 manipulator, a Class 4 torque tool or an IHPU outright ties up significant capital in equipment that may only be needed for one campaign. Rental keeps that capital free and puts the cost firmly in the project OpEx column, which is often easier to justify internally and to clients.
Certified, maintained and ready to deploy
When you rent ROV tooling from AJL Subsea, every piece of equipment leaves our Aberdeen workshop tested, calibrated and with full documentation. You’re not managing service intervals, sourcing spare parts or arranging calibration certificates — that’s on us. For operators running tight project schedules, that’s a significant reduction in administrative and logistical overhead.
Access to the right tool for the job
Not every campaign needs the same tooling. A rental fleet gives you the flexibility to specify exactly what the job requires — whether that’s a Webtool cutter for a decommissioning scope, a Blue Logic hot stab for an intervention, or a Class 1-4 torque tool package for a tree installation. You’re not making do with what’s already on the shelf.
No storage, maintenance or depreciation costs
Owned subsea tooling needs to be stored correctly, maintained on a regular schedule, and recertified periodically whether it’s been used or not. For companies that don’t have a dedicated equipment management function, this overhead adds up quickly.
When Purchasing ROV Tooling Makes Sense
Purchase isn’t always the wrong answer. There are scenarios where owning tooling is the more logical choice:
- High utilisation over a sustained period — if you’re running a long-term IRM contract and certain tools will be in near-constant use, the rental cost over the contract term may exceed purchase price.
- Highly bespoke or modified tooling — if you’ve had equipment custom-manufactured or modified for a specific application, ownership is the only option.
- Immediate availability requirements — companies with their own workshop and maintenance capability may prefer to own critical backup tooling to guarantee availability at short notice.
Even in these cases, many operators use a hybrid approach — owning their core tooling and renting to supplement for specific campaigns or when their owned kit is in for service.
The North Sea Context
The North Sea has specific characteristics that make rental particularly attractive compared to other operating regions. Campaigns can be short-notice, vessel windows are weather-dependent, and project scopes change. Committing to a large tooling purchase before a contract is confirmed is a risk many operators quite reasonably don’t want to take.
